Has there ever been a best picture race less ripe for a movie-themed Oscar party? One film is set in space; NASA’s most popular orbital meal is freeze-dried shrimp cocktail, but alas, NASA doesn’t deliver. Hors d’oeuvres to accompany “12 Years a Slave,” the early AIDS drama “Dallas Buyers Club,” or the Somali hijacking nail-biter “Captain Phillips”? Insensitive. “The Wolf of Wall Street” offers up a variety of ingestibles – many illegal. We give up. What is Wolfgang Puck, celebrating his 20th year catering the post-Oscars Governors Ball, serving to his 1,500 VIPs? For appetizers, Bolognese-stuffed rice balls, mini-burgers with aged cheddar and remoulade, spicy tuna tartare in a sesame miso cone, salmon on flatbread shaped like Oscar statuettes and topped with caviar, and taro root and avocado tacos for the vegan guests. There will be trays of homemade pretzels with pimento cheese and Parmesan-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates, and small plates of chicken pot pie with black truffles, baked potatoes with caviar, Shanghai lobster and short rib with goulash and spaetzle – comfort food with Continental flair.
